Boy Scouts, parents and educators are building a special garden at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad in memory of a former student who passed away before he could finish the project.
The student, Chase Quartarone, started planning the garden almost a year ago but was unable to start building it before he died of cancer in December at age 16. The spot was intended to be a place for students to read to the school’s therapy dog, Rosie.
Chase wanted to build the garden as a community service project for his Boy Scout troop, his friends and family said. It was the last achievement he needed to reach the Scouts’ highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Now his troop, his parents and educators at the Carlsbad campus have vowed to move forward with the plans.
