CARLSBAD: Scouts honor late comrade

Boy Scout leader Bob Dixon, left, spoke at a recent Optimist Club of Carlsbad meeting about a project to honor late Boy Scout Chase Quartarone of Troop 746 who passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December. The troop will be finishing Chase’s Eagle Scout project to build a reading park at Kelly Elementary School and will award the Eagle Scout rank to Chase posthumously.

CARLSBAD: Lucas flies like an Eagle

Lucas Stauffer of Carlsbad Boy Scout Troop 745 recently earned his Eagle Award. Lucas, 17, a junior at Carlsbad High School, built historic replica items for the Discovery Center in Carlsbad as part of his Eagle Scout rank requirement.

CARLSBAD: School garden to serve as memorial for former student

Boy Scouts, parents and educators are building a special garden at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad in memory of a former student who passed away before he could finish the project.

The student, Chase Quartarone, started planning the garden almost a year ago but was unable to start building it before he died of cancer in December at age 16. The spot was intended to be a place for students to read to the school’s therapy dog, Rosie.

Chase wanted to build the garden as a community service project for his Boy Scout troop, his friends and family said. It was the last achievement he needed to reach the Scouts’ highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Now his troop, his parents and educators at the Carlsbad campus have vowed to move forward with the plans.

Carlsbad: Two earn Eagle Scout awards

Gavin McMahan and Grant Perdue, members of Boy Scout Troop 716 of Carlsbad 3, recently received their Eagle Scout Awards. Gavin installed a chain-link fence at Calavera Hills Middle School and Grant cleared the ground and installed sprinklers at Orchard Park at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel on Chestnut Avenue.

VISTA: Scout earns Eagle award

Jacob Haproff of Vista Boy Scout Troop 722 recently finished the requirements to earn his Eagle Scout Award. Jacob’s Eagle project was to build and install two benches for the City of Vista Conservancy Nature Trail.

CARLSBAD: Optimists support Eagle scout project

Mark Beyer of Boy Scout Troop 750 in Carlsbad recently gave a presentation to the Optimist Club of Carlsbad, “The Achievers,” regarding his Eagle Scout project, which was installing a seating wall and stairs to replace the bare dirt slope at Aviara Oaks Middle School.

OCEANSIDE: Eagle Scout landscapes for church

Travis Russell of Oceanside Troop 752 has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle leadership project, Travis did a landscaping project for First Presbyterian Church in Oceanside.

CARLSBAD: Eagle Scout builds benches

Santa Margarita District and Carlsbad Boy Scout Troop 745 recently announced that Brian Oh has earned his Eagle rank. Brian’s Eagle project was to build benches for Calavera Hills Elementary School in Carlsbad.
